It has been six full years since I last traveled. And this lack of travel was due to my fear of flying. I somehow developed this notion that during a flight my plane would fall a few thousand feet in the air and I would hate to be there when that happened. One of my best buddy had been persuading me for the last 2 years to go to Goa and he finally got me to go.
The flight to Goa from Delhi lasted about 2hours and was surprisingly turbulence free. I went in the last week of February and the weather was pretty decent with warm/hot days and pleasant evenings. We were booked to stay in South Goa at a hotel called Alila. The hotel and it’s services were great. The staff is one of the most hospitable I have seen in my life. The saving grace of the trip was the hotel and it’s awesome pool. A picture of the beach that is close to the hotel followed by some shots of the hotel itself:

South Goa does not have much to offer. All the action is in north Goa. Also South Goa is more expensive than it’s northern counterpart. The beaches are relatively less populated and therefore there are fewer options for a varied culinary experience. There are the usual shacks when you get on the beach offering food and drinks. These shacks can also be tourist traps if you are visiting Goa for the first time. An example is as follows:
“On the 1st day of our arrival we decided to hit the beach in the evening. After having some fun at the beach we settled at a shack for an early snack/dinner. The Shack had one person serving and an owner lady who apparently cooked. We ordered various items like Seafood Pizza, Broasted Fish, Seafood Platter, drinks, etc etc. Now the Seafood platter did not have a price and when we settled to pay the bill my eyes literally popped. I was thinking that a meal for 4 would cost around $40(INR 2000) which is the norm. But the bill was for $100(INR 5000). The catch was the Seafood Platter which did not have a price on the menu and ended up costing $60 alone. Did I mention that the platter was crap hehe.”
So the lesson is never buy anything in Goa that does not have a listed price and if you plan to do so, please confirm the price before plunging your wallet into the gutter.
Now on to the pleasantries. We were on Majorda beach which is like a minute’s drive from Alila Diwa Hotel. It was a clean and scantly populated beach but not many great opportunities to be exploited unfortunately. South Goa had a very calm and relaxed feel about itself lacking the chaos of beaches in North Goa. Some snaps of the beach below:

Now getting to North Goa was relatively easy. Just hire a car or a cab and it is pretty much a straightforward path. And once you arrive, it feels like you have just left the land of the dead behind. The options for eating, staying, etc are numerous. A few pictures of the food we had are below at places like Athen’s Pizzeria(Seafood Pizza below),Fiesta at Baga(Night food shots),…..

So all in all it was a good trip and as my friend said I did clear my head and am looking forward to hopefully traveling more in the near future.
Please post your views in the comment box.
Cheers.

Beautifuly described experience.. It’s been over 10 years since I visited Goa.. can’t wait to go again
The hotel looks gorgeous!
2 curious things.. 1) y not take the train, instead of waiting for 6 years to fly? and 2)Seriously, who does not check the price before purchasing anything, even if it’s food?
The photographs and all the polishing, definitely have captured your best moments.. I’m sure there’s a lot more to it.. but just make sure you share your honeymoon experience the same way;) Cheers!

Pika it will probably take me a harrowing 3 days in train to reach GOA and it is no eurorail system that we have here (: so trains suck :p
